Celebrating International Clinical Trials Day at St George’s

Staff, patients, visitors and research teams came together at St George’s Hospital to celebrate International Clinical Trials Day and showcase the breadth of research taking place across our hospitals.

Held in the Hyde Park Room, Lanesborough Wing, the event brought together teams from across the NIHR St George’s Clinical Research Facility (CRF) and wider research community, with stalls highlighting the different studies, services and specialities helping to improve patient care through research.

International Clinical Trials Day is marked each year to recognise the importance of clinical trials and the people who make them possible — from patients and public contributors to clinical teams, researchers, nurses, laboratory staff, support teams and volunteers.

Throughout the event, research teams spoke with staff and visitors about their studies, answered questions, and encouraged more people to find out how they can get involved in research.

Stalls included teams from areas such as cardiology, hepatology, respiratory, musculoskeletal, maternity and emergency department research, alongside the CRF team and colleagues promoting the National Institute for Health and Care Research’s Be Part of Research programme.

Attendees also had the opportunity to learn more about the work of the Clinical Research Facility, which is part-funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research. Since receiving National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) CRF designation in 2022, the facility has continued to support high-quality, patient-centred research across a wide range of specialities.

The day also celebrated the people behind research delivery—from nurses, doctors and laboratory staff to matrons, facilities colleagues, catering teams, communications staff, patient and public contributors, and wider Trust colleagues who helped make the event possible.

The event also featured a relaxed “chill zone”, giving colleagues and visitors space to pause, connect and reflect on the role research plays in improving healthcare.

International Clinical Trials Day is not only a celebration but also a reminder that research is a shared effort. Every study depends on collaboration between patients, communities, clinical teams, researchers and support services.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported the event, including our research teams, stallholders, CRF staff, Patient Public Involvement, Engagement and Participation steering group members and everyone who attended on the day.

Your support, passion and commitment helped show why clinical research matters — and why more people should have the opportunity to take part.
